We say on Sundays throughout the year, “Glory to God in the highest.” And Psalm 155 famously declares: Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name give glory (Ps.115.55).
Well, how? How do we actually give God glory here and now? Here are some thoughts.
First, we look into our own selves and accept that God is giving me the gifts He has chosen for me. I deliberately include in that being OK with what I am now (apart from sin, of course) and for where God has brought me in my life up to today.
Then, I say out loud and in public when I get the chance, that I am content with where God has brought me and with what life has brought me under His divine providence..
Here is a final point: I deliberately repudiate dejection, disaffection, and disgust with my self, my life world, and all those around me. Instead, I thank God for all of it; He knows what He is doing.
Now of course—I can’t approve of the rich scarfing up all the wealth. I can’t approve of violence by persons or by gangs. I can’t approve of nations invading others or plotting secretly for their destruction. I can’t approve of a lot of things—almost all of which are beyond my control. So my disapproval and rejection is not the center of my self and my life. It’s on the peripheries, where in fact it is.
Rather, I center on my self and then I make known that I clearly believe in God in Christ and am well aware of the real world around me (and the people) and am a happy person much given to joy and laughter.
Then I am putting glory where it belongs—in God.
