My Spiritual Wanderings and Wonderings

The First Last Supper

Joseph Avatar

The Savior’s Last Supper was in a real sense the First Savior’s Supper—in the sense that Jesus instituted the Eucharist at that supper.

This can hardly be something Jesus thought of only as they were sitting there at dinner (an idea I have heard vaguely  preached).   Jesus had already told them what was about to happen to Him. They were trying to get their heads around this, and their hearts, too. And then He takes bread and He takes a cup of wine.

This thought and action engaged both His divinity and His humanity. In fact, it is really the extension from His own divine Self to bring about the union of the two—now in Bread and Wine instead of flesh and His divine Self.

Both are great  mysteries.  We need to keep that in mind when we receive Communion in the routine way that reception can easily become.
